Brighton is not far away, only about 60 miles directly south of London. It is a popular seaside city, attracting swarms of people from London on their days off work. It has the amenities of London, but next to the sea. As it draws many from London, it also has quite a large gay scene in the district of Kemp Town.
Another good alternative amongst London’s nearby cities is Chelmsford. Well, actually it has not yet been classified as a city, but it has been nominated and it rivals most nearby modern cities. It is a very large and historic town.
The Town of Chelmsford is popular with for tourists and people who commute to London for work. It is also near some very nice smaller villages that retain the traditional charms of the British countryside. The town itself is only about 32 miles outside of London.
